Change of Plans

Screened porch

Screened porch

Today the guys had planned to go fishing in Mom’s new husband’s ponds, but Ron got sick yesterday and was in bad shape today.  Some kind of stomach bug. So they ended up postponing the fishing.

Mom and Jean (French for John, apparently) are keeping both their houses.  Mom has a very modest little frame house.  Jean’s is a big, comfortable brick home a few miles farther out of town.   He has cattle and sweet, beautiful working dogs, so Mom and he make frequent trips back and forth, but have chosen to live in Mom’s little house.

So they took us to see Jean’s house today.  I didn’t take photos of the beautiful interior because it just didn’t seem right.  But I couldn’t resist their huge screened in porch!

We were very impressed with Jean — most importantly because we have never seen Mom so happy before.  He’s friendly and easy-going, and we enjoy being around him.

We were planning to leave tomorrow, but since Ron was sick, he needs another day to recover before we hit the road.  He’s doing a lot better this evening, so we expect him to bounce back fast.

I took a few pictures of Jean, but they didn’t turn out well.  But just so you know, he is tall, thin and handsome.  🙂

  1. Sorry to hear that Ron wasn’t feeling well (although by the time you read this he’ll probably be fine again). It’s lovely that your Mom is doing well and is so happy – I remember being pleasantly surprised at how happy my Mom was in her retirement community after my Dad passed away – when she moved there, I think she was happy to be in a large, social community (she and my Dad had been kind of isolated on their ranch) and to not have to cook or clean anymore – finally, a real retirement.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

    • Anne, we tease Mom about having a better social life than we do… and romance! A few years back Mom told me she thought a lot about dying. Now she is too busy and enjoying life too much to think somber thoughts. I am so happy for her!

I could live on that screened in porch! Morning coffee and a book.

  3. Beautiful place and so warm looking!!! Your mom just looks like someone you would want to sit down and have a cup of coffee with. It is nice to not be in a hurry and be able to extend your visit. Enjoy all that time with your mom. I would like to have one more day with mine.

    • Sharon, that place was obviously designed with entertaining in mind. The whole place invites you to slow down and relax and enjoy. And that’s exactly what we are doing with Mom! 🙂

  4. That’s one sweet sunroom Sharon. Hope Ron on the mend…chilly rainy day here. Enjoy your sunshine!

    • Isn’t it beautiful? Ron is doing much better this morning. Doesn’t feel up to going fishing, but is outside enjoying a cup of coffee now. It’s very cloudy here this morning. I haven’t peeked at the weather yet. But the sky had mackeral clouds yesterday which usually means rain in 2 or 3 days.

  5. You’d have to pry me out of that porch with a crowbar! So inviting….

Glad to hear Ron is feeling better, and an extra day with your mom isn’t such a bad thing, either. Enjoy.

    • We are almost glad we had to stay an extra day. I can’t believe how much energy Mom has!

  6. Glad to hear your Mom is so happy. Where there is life, there is hope, right?
